Villareal SAQ Warm Up
ADDED TO FAVOURITES

Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 8 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch
This dynamic warm-up drill focuses on crisp passing, explosive footwork, and individual ball control. Players begin by playing a firm pass into a teammate, executing a 1-2 combination, then immediately sprinting forward into an SAQ ladder to work on quick feet and coordination.
After completing the ladder, they receive the ball back from their partner and perform a skill move (e.g., step-over, scissors, or feint) to beat a mannequin. They then dribble into space before returning to the start. The practice develops tempo, technical sharpness, and movement efficiency in a game-relevant context.
• Focus on crisp, accurate passing in the 1-2 – Players should punch passes with proper weight, scan before receiving, and open their body for a clean return under light pressure.
• Promote light, controlled footwork through the ladders – Keep heads up, arms relaxed, and concentrate on rhythm and speed of movement to mimic sharp directional changes seen in games.
• Encourage explosive reception after the ladder exit – Players must be prepared to receive at pace, shift their body to control instantly, and transition into the next action without delay.
• Stress creativity and confidence when beating the mannequin – Use a skill move with speed and intent, maintain close control, and accelerate past the mannequin with purpose into space.
Use a Moving Server for Return Pass
Instead of a static pass returner, the server moves laterally after the first pass, forcing the player to adjust angles and foot positioning.
Focus: Improves awareness and timing of movement after the pass, sharpening real-game passing dynamics, reactions, and scanning under pressure.
