Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 13 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch

  • In this wide progression drill, the attacking team begins with possession inside a 15x15 yard grid located in the wide zone. Their objective is to skillfully progress the ball past two defenders positioned to block their advance. Once the attackers successfully bypass the defenders, they are allowed to deliver a cross into a single attacker positioned centrally for an unopposed finish on goal.

This drill emphasizes wide play development, encouraging quick combinations, effective use of space, and accurate crossing. It also develops attackers’ timing and finishing skills in a controlled, yet game-realistic scenario.

  • • Encourage quick, precise passing and smart movement – Players must keep ball control tight while using sharp combinations to beat defenders effectively and create clear crossing lanes.

    • Stress awareness and timing of runs into the box – Attackers should time their runs perfectly to meet the cross, maximizing scoring opportunities with well-coordinated movement.

    • Emphasize accuracy and quality of crosses – Crosses should be delivered with the right pace and placement to allow the attacker an easy, unopposed finish.

    • Reinforce defensive pressure and compactness – Defenders need to maintain close marking and communicate effectively to prevent easy ball progression and crossing opportunities.

  • Add a Second Attacker to the Finish

Introduce a second attacker making a simultaneous run into the box to create more dynamic finishing options and force defenders to make quick decisions.

Focus: Enhances attacker’s timing, spatial awareness, and decision-making under pressure while encouraging defenders to adjust marking and communication rapidly.

  • Limit Crossers to One Touch Delivery

Require players crossing the ball to deliver their pass with one touch, increasing the pace and challenge of execution in the wide zone.

Focus: Develops quick decision-making, technical precision, and sharp timing for both crossers and attackers, simulating high-pressure game scenarios.
