Instructions/Setup:

This drill focuses on improving speed, agility, and finishing under pressure. Play starts with two players competing head-to-head in a SAQ (Speed, Agility, and Quickness) race. The first player to reach the ball will then transition into an unopposed finishing scenario. The second player must quickly react, recover, and sprint backwards to their designated pole before getting ready for the next round.

The drill improves reaction times, acceleration, and the ability to finish under pressure after a competitive race.

Coaching Notes:

• Quick Acceleration: Emphasize the importance of explosive acceleration as soon as the whistle is blown, focusing on the initial burst of speed to get to the ball first.

• Reactivity and Recovery: The second player must react quickly and use proper running technique to recover fast to their designated pole, maintaining focus throughout the drill.

• Finishing with Composure: The player who wins the race should focus on staying composed while finishing, even after a competitive sprint. Encourage calmness when taking the shot.

• Efficient Footwork: In the SAQ race, players should focus on short, quick steps to optimize their speed and make sure they maintain balance and control when changing direction.

Progression 1: Add Pressure to the Finish:

After the race, introduce a defender who applies pressure as the player finishes, forcing the player to make a quick decision and take the shot under pressure.

Focus: This progression simulates game-like situations, where players need to focus on finishing while under competitive pressure from an opponent.

Progression 2: Increase Sprint Distance:

Increase the distance in the SAQ race, forcing players to sustain their sprint over a longer distance before transitioning to the finish.

Focus: This progression challenges players to maintain speed and composure throughout a longer sprint, helping them build endurance while maintaining a high level of performance.
