Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 11 | Pitch size: 20x35
This drill is designed to improve team possession under pressure and quick transition into attack. The practice takes place in a 20x35 yard grid with a goal positioned at each end. The possession team consists of 4 outfield players plus 2 goalkeepers and 1 neutral player, creating a numerical advantage of 7 players maintaining ball control against 4 pressing opponents. The possession team’s primary task is to retain the ball by using effective passing, movement, and support play.
If the pressing team manages to win the ball cleanly, they immediately transition into attack and attempt to score in either of the two main goals at opposite ends of the grid. This creates a realistic game scenario where players must be alert in possession and prepare quickly to defend or attack based on the turnover.
• Emphasize Quick, Accurate Passing and Smart Movement – Encourage players to maintain sharp passing angles and constant movement to support possession under pressure.
• Promote Effective Communication Among Possession Team – Players must talk actively to organize and anticipate pressing movements, improving overall team cohesion.
• Stress Awareness and Immediate Transition After Losing Possession – Possession players should quickly shift mindset from offense to defense to delay or prevent counterattacks.
• Encourage Aggressive Pressing and Fast Counterattacks – The pressing team must work as a unit to win the ball quickly and transition with speed to exploit the goals effectively.
Limit Touches for Possession Players
Introduce a two-touch maximum for the possession team to increase pressure and improve quick decision-making.
Focus: Enhances technical precision and rapid ball circulation under tighter constraints, improving possession speed.
