Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 18 | Pitch size: 45x45

  • This high-intensity rondo drill is set up using three connected 15x15 yard grids, each occupied by teams of six players. The drill focuses on fitness, quick reactions, and possession skills under pressure. At the coach’s whistle, two players from the first grid sprint into the second grid to press and attempt to win possession in a challenging 2v6 situation. Their goal is to disrupt the larger possession team and regain the ball quickly.

Once these two players successfully win possession in the second grid, two players from the second grid then immediately sprint into the third grid to repeat the same pressing and winning scenario. Following this, two players from the third grid will run into the first grid to continue the cycle. This rotation maintains continuous movement, combining cardiovascular fitness with sharp decision-making and technical ability in tight spaces.

  • • Encourage Explosive and Quick Transitions Between Grids – Players must sprint rapidly and be mentally prepared to switch roles from possession to pressing instantly.

    • Stress Communication and Awareness During Rotations – Effective verbal and non-verbal cues will help players anticipate the timing and positioning of incoming attackers.

    • Promote High-Intensity Pressing with Controlled Aggression – While pressing hard, players need to maintain discipline to avoid fouls and maintain effective pressure.

    • Focus on Maintaining Possession Under Intense Pressure – Possession teams should use quick, precise passing and smart body positioning to withstand the 2v6 challenge.

  • Reduce Recovery Time Between Rotations

Shorten the rest or pause between rotations to increase fitness demands and test players' endurance.

Focus: Builds greater aerobic capacity and mental resilience by minimizing recovery and encouraging sustained high effort.

  • Limit Touches for Possession Teams

Implement a maximum of two touches per possession player to increase technical difficulty and decision speed.

Focus: Enhances quick ball control and sharp passing under intense pressure, improving technical and tactical sharpness during fitness work.
