Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 10 | Pitch size: 30x36
This drill is set up on a 30x36 yard pitch with two main goals, each guarded by a goalkeeper. Teams are divided with two players positioned on the left side and two players on the right side of the grid. The drill begins with simple passing across the grid between teammates, establishing possession and connection before the competitive phase starts.
Once the initial pass is played, a 1v1 attacking and defending phase immediately begins on each side. The player who made the pass now quickly transitions to defend the teammate receiving the ball, resulting in two simultaneous 1v1 battles. This dynamic setup challenges players to react swiftly both offensively and defensively while working under pressure in tight spaces.
• Emphasize Quick Transition Between Attacking and Defending Roles – Players must rapidly switch mindset and positioning from passer to defender to maintain intensity and effectiveness during 1v1 duels.
• Encourage Sharp, Controlled Dribbling and Ball Manipulation in Tight Spaces – Attackers should use close control and change of pace or direction to create separation and scoring opportunities.
• Focus on Defenders’ Anticipation and Positioning to Limit Attacking Options – Defenders need to read the attacker’s moves early and position themselves to block passing lanes and shooting angles.
• Promote Communication and Awareness to Manage Simultaneous 1v1s Effectively – Players should stay alert to both their duel and the overall game context to optimize decision-making and spatial awareness.
Allow Defenders to Support Each Other Post Transition
Permit defenders to briefly support their teammate in the adjacent 1v1 by double-teaming before settling back, increasing defensive complexity and encouraging teamwork.
Focus: Develops coordinated defensive strategies and communication under pressure, fostering better collective defending in 1v1 situations.
