Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 9 | Pitch size: Half Pitch

  • This build-up practice focuses on developing a team's ability to progress play against an opposition midfield 3. The central defenders (#5 and #4) and the centre forward (#9) are unopposed, while the players inside the central grid are opposed. The team building up must focus on breaking lines through passing, dribbling, and quick combinations, aiming to score into either of the two mini goals. The 3 pressing defenders (reds) attempt to win possession and then quickly transition to attack by scoring into any of the mini goals directly ahead of them. The two defenders (#5 and #4) can step in to protect the mini goals after losing possession.

  • • Breaking Lines – Encourage players to make penetrating passes, dribbles, and runs that break through the opposition midfield. The central defenders (#5 and #4) should look for opportunities to play direct passes or use the centre forward (#9) as a focal point to progress the ball forward.

    • Quick Combinations – Stress the importance of quick combinations between the central defenders and the centre forward to create space and disorganize the opposition midfield. Players must work together to maintain fluidity and increase the speed of play to move the ball past the opposition press effectively.

    • Decision-Making Under Pressure – The team building up should be taught to make quick decisions while under pressure from the 3 pressing defenders. This includes knowing when to play simple passes, when to dribble, and when to combine with teammates to break the opposition's lines.

    • Defensive Transition – When the opposition wins possession, emphasize the defensive transition of the central defenders (#5 and #4). These defenders should immediately step in to block shots or prevent counter-attacks, using their positioning and awareness to help protect the mini goals.

  • Limit Time to Build
Introduce a time limit for the team to complete the build-up and break the lines. This will increase the intensity of the drill, forcing the team to make faster decisions and execute quicker passes, simulating game-like pressure.

Focus: Improve decision-making and speed of play under time constraints.

  • Add More Defenders
Introduce an additional defender or two into the midfield grid to increase pressure on the team building up. The added defenders will make it harder to progress the ball, requiring the team to make more creative decisions and use effective combination play to break through.

Focus: Improve the ability to break through a more compact and organized defensive midfield.
