Instructions/Setup:

The practice begins with a 3rd man passing combination that leads to an attacking player receiving the ball and immediately competing in a 1v1 against a defender. The attacker aims to score, while the defender's objective is to win possession of the ball and then dribble through the central gate to score a point.

Coaching Notes:

• Timing of the 3rd Man Pass – Emphasize the timing and movement of the third man. The pass should be played at the right moment to allow the receiver to attack quickly and use the defender’s positioning to their advantage. The third man must make a well-timed run to open up space and create an effective attacking opportunity.

• 1v1 Attack – When attacking in the 1v1 scenario, encourage the player to dribble with purpose and take on the defender with confidence. Attackers should focus on using a variety of moves, like feints or changes of direction, to unbalance the defender and create space to shoot or pass.

• Defensive Pressure – Defenders should focus on staying goal-side of the attacker and force them into less dangerous areas. The defender must be aggressive in closing down the attacker, using good body positioning to block the path to goal while waiting for the right moment to win the ball.

• Transition After Possession – Once the defender wins the ball, they must immediately transition into attack mode and dribble through the central gate. This transition requires the defender to be sharp, using quick decision-making and exploiting the space to earn a point for their team.

Progression 1: Add a Second Defender

Introduce a second defender to the 1v1 scenario. This forces the attacker to make quicker decisions, and the defenders must work together to contain the attacker and regain possession.

Focus:

Improves attackers' ability to make decisions quickly under pressure and enhances defenders' ability to work in pairs.

Progression 2: Limit the Number of Touches for the Attacker

Limit the number of touches the attacker can take (e.g., 2 or 3 touches). This will force them to make quicker decisions and improve the speed of their attacks.
