Instructions/Setup:

This unopposed finishing practice takes place in the size of two 18-yard boxes. There are two goals and two goalkeepers positioned in each goal. A player in the middle acts as the link between the two teams, playing a 1-2 combination pass to receive the ball and finish into the goal. After completing a finish, the player then quickly transitions to the opposite side to receive the ball and repeat the process. This practice focuses on continuous movement and finishing under minimal pressure.

Coaching Notes:

• Movement and Timing – Players should focus on their movement off the ball, ensuring they are in the right position to receive the pass and finish with minimal delay. The timing of the runs should align with the player playing the 1-2 pass to ensure the ball is delivered at the right moment for an accurate finish.

• Finishing Technique – Encourage a variety of finishing techniques, such as side-foot, instep drive, or placement shots, depending on the situation. Emphasize composure and accuracy when finishing in front of goal, ensuring the ball is placed in the most effective area.

• Quick Transitions – After completing the finish, players should focus on quickly transitioning to the opposite side of the field to maintain the flow of the practice. Quick movement between each phase ensures the tempo of the practice remains high.

• Goalkeeper Awareness – Goalkeepers should be ready to adjust quickly to the angle of the shot and focus on positioning themselves well to save the shots. They should track the ball and anticipate where the shots are likely to come from based on the angle of the pass and the player's run.

Progression 1: Add Pressure to the Finishing Player

Introduce a passive defender to apply light pressure on the player receiving the ball and preparing to finish. This will help simulate a more realistic game scenario and encourage better decision-making when shooting under slight pressure.

Focus:

Improves finishing under pressure and enhances decision-making when shooting at goal.

Progression 2: Limit Touches for the Finishing Player

Limit the number of touches the finishing player can take (e.g., 2 or 3 touches). This increases the urgency of the practice and encourages players to finish more quickly and decisively.

Focus:

Enhances quick thinking and sharpens finishing accuracy when under time constraints.
