Instructions/Setup:
This unopposed build-up practice focuses on the relationship between the defensive midfielder (DM) and the forward player. The DM works on movements to receive the ball while the forward focuses on creating space and screening the ball into central areas. The DM's objective is to move out of the shadow of the forward, receiving the ball and progressing it forward into more attacking positions.
Coaching Notes:
• Movement off the Ball – The DM should focus on making dynamic movements to lose the forward’s shadow and create an angle to receive the ball. Encourage the DM to vary their movement to pull defenders out of position, either checking back or making a run into space to receive the ball.
• Screening and Link-Up Play – The forward player’s role is crucial in screening the ball into central areas and creating space for the DM. Encourage the forward to work on shielding the ball, making it easier for the DM to receive a pass and progress the play effectively. Good link-up play between the two is key to breaking the opposition’s lines.
• Timing and Awareness – Both players must have good timing to ensure the DM receives the ball in a space where they can progress it forward without pressure. The forward needs to be aware of the position of both the ball and the defenders, ensuring they provide an effective screen at the right time.
• Passing Precision – The DM should focus on the precision of the pass when receiving the ball from the forward. The ball must be played with the right weight and angle so the DM can either control and progress or pass it on to the next phase of play.
Progression 1: Add Defenders for Pressure
Introduce a single passive defender to pressure the DM after they receive the ball. This forces the DM to make quicker decisions and handle defensive pressure in their build-up.
Focus:
Develops the ability to receive and distribute under pressure, improving decision-making in real match situations.
Progression 2: Involve More Players in the Build-Up
Introduce additional players to join the practice and work on creating triangles and passing lanes. This will replicate a more game-like situation where the DM and forward need to involve other teammates for effective build-up play.
Focus:
Improves team coordination and the ability to play through multiple passing channels.
