Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 6 | Pitch size: 20x20

  • This technical activation focuses on the number 6’s ability to receive the ball under control and quickly link play through effective passing combinations. Players work within a compact grid where the number 6 receives passes from different angles, faces varying directional pressures, and connects with teammates through one- or two-touch combinations. The drill develops first touch, vision, and quick decision-making to simulate the pivotal role of the number 6 in transitioning play from defense to attack.

The drill encourages multi-directional receiving, body positioning to open passing lanes, and precise execution of short passing sequences. This structured yet fluid environment helps build the number 6’s confidence and technical sharpness for controlling tempo and maintaining possession in tight spaces.

  • • Encourage the number 6 to receive with an open body shape – This allows quick scanning of the field, immediate identification of passing options, and better awareness of opponents’ positions.

    • Stress crisp, accurate passing combined with quick first touches – This maintains possession rhythm, speeds up team transitions, and reduces the chance of losing the ball under pressure.

    • Emphasise communication and anticipation of teammates’ movement – This promotes seamless timing, fluid combinations, and helps the number 6 create passing triangles effectively.

    • Reinforce composure under directional pressure – The number 6 should stay calm, focused, and controlled to make efficient decisions even when closely marked by opponents.

  • Increase tempo and reduce touches

Increase the pace of the drill and limit the number 6 to a maximum of two touches per possession – This pushes for faster decision-making and cleaner, more precise passing under game-speed conditions.

Focus: Enhances speed of play, technical accuracy, and mental sharpness under limited touches.

  • Add passive defensive pressure

Introduce a passive defender applying light pressure on the number 6 as they receive and connect – This encourages sharper ball control, quicker decisions, and better shielding under mild pressure.

Focus: Receiving and playing under pressure with improved composure and technique.
