Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 9 | Pitch size: 40x30

  • This is a high-intensity 2v1 into double 1v1 transition practice. The drill begins with two attackers combining to score against a single defender in the main goal. The focus is on decision-making in overloads, movement off the ball, and exploiting space in advanced areas of the pitch.

Once the 2v1 phase ends, two defenders positioned behind the main goal immediately sprint forward with a new ball. Each looks to drive and finish into one of the two mini goals, while the original two attackers must transition quickly and defend both 1v1 scenarios, reacting instantly from attack to defence.

  • • Emphasise quick, purposeful combinations to take advantage of the 2v1 – Encourage precise timing, sharp movement, angles, and weight of pass to break defensive lines effectively and finish quickly.

    • Focus on fast mental transition from attacking to defensive mindset – Players must recover urgently, scan the pitch, track runners, and engage opponents without hesitation or delay.

    • Promote sharp, controlled 1v1 defending under physical fatigue – Defenders should stay compact, time tackles well, show attackers away from goal, and delay forward momentum with intelligent positioning.

    • Encourage sprint recovery runs with good scanning and communication – Players must identify central and wide threats early, work together vocally, and protect both mini goals using high defensive effort.

  • Introduce time limits in both attacking and recovery phases

Impose a 5-second time limit to score in the 2v1, and 6 seconds for defenders to counter and finish in mini goals. This forces quicker decisions and more explosive transitions.

Focus: Develops urgency, mental sharpness, and physical commitment during high-speed transitional moments under time constraints and pressure.

  • Require a combination before defenders can shoot in mini goals

The two counter-attacking defenders must combine with a pass before shooting. This demands coordination and reduces predictability during the counter phase.

Focus: Reinforces teamwork, delayed attacking decisions, and improves timing and support runs when transitioning from defence to attack quickly and effectively.
