Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 12 | Pitch size: 20x20

  • This is a competitive 3-team rondo practice using two adjacent 10x10 yard grids placed side by side. Two teams of four players each operate inside their own grid, aiming to retain possession through short, sharp passing sequences. The third team defends by sending two players into each grid, creating a 4v2 scenario in both spaces. Four mini goals are positioned outside the grids—two on each side—to reward successful defensive transitions.

If a defender wins possession and scores into one of the mini goals, their team rotates roles with the team that lost the ball in that specific grid. This creates a continuous cycle of attacking, defending, and transitioning under pressure, helping players develop spatial awareness, pressing coordination, and ball retention skills at pace.

  • • Encourage pressing defenders to stay compact and communicate to close passing angles – Cohesion and timing are essential to force errors in tight spaces and create scoring chances.

    • Focus on sharp, one- or two-touch passing from possession teams – Speed of circulation helps break pressing lines and maintain control under pressure with good ball tempo.

    • Remind players to quickly reset their shape after possession turnovers – Transitioning immediately improves realism and builds reaction-based awareness in game-relevant scenarios.

    • Promote quick decision-making and confident finishing when defenders win the ball – Players must capitalize on chances to score and switch roles swiftly after turnovers.

  • Limit touches to one or two in possession

Restricting touch count forces possession teams to play with urgency and accuracy while working under pressure from two active defenders.

Focus: Enhances tempo, technical speed, composure, and quick ball circulation under constant pressure.

  • Allow defenders to switch between grids

Give defending players freedom to rotate or switch grids mid-round, increasing unpredictability and forcing possession teams to stay alert and adaptive.

Focus: Improves scanning, spatial awareness, and adaptability while increasing defensive coordination and tactical alertness.
