Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 8 | Pitch size: 30x36

  • This 3v2 counter-attacking drill begins with an attacker playing a precise pass down the grid to two teammates positioned ahead near the attacking third. Once the ball is received, the initial passer must drop back quickly to get onside, creating a dynamic 3v2 attacking scenario inside a defined grid. Meanwhile, two defenders start off the grid and must sprint around a pole placed outside the playing area to recover and enter the grid live, simulating realistic recovery runs under intense match pressure.

The drill focuses on rapid transitions, timing of runs, and exploiting numerical advantages in attack. Defenders work on quick recovery and positioning to disrupt the counter-attack before it develops fully.

  • • Emphasize precise timing of the initial pass and off-the-ball runs – Coordinated movement creates space and maximizes attacking opportunities quickly and effectively under pressure.

    • Encourage attackers to maintain high tempo and sharp passing under pressure – Fast ball movement is crucial to exploit defensive disorganization during intense counter-attacks.

    • Stress defenders’ sprint intensity and positioning when making recovery runs – Effective recovery delays or stops attacks, greatly improving defensive resilience and team organization.

    • Highlight communication between attackers to coordinate overlapping and support runs – Clear verbal and non-verbal cues enhance attacking cohesion, decision-making, and overall team fluidity.

  • Add a third defender joining the recovery runs

Increase defensive pressure by introducing a third defender who also makes a recovery sprint, making the attacking phase more challenging and realistic.

Focus: Improves attackers’ decision-making under heavier pressure and promotes sharper offensive tactics with increased complexity.

  • Restrict attackers to two touches maximum

Limit touches to increase speed and precision in the counter-attack, encouraging quicker ball control and faster attacking moves under pressure.

Focus: Enhances technical sharpness and rapid decision-making during fast transitional play, improving overall attacking efficiency.
